Zephyr Hats: University of Iowa Hawkeyes

Oh ya know, just another team/college-oriented post; this weeks: University of Iowa Hawkeyes! This is part of a series that included AuburnBYUCUDetroit Red WingsEdmonton OilersFlorida GatorsGeorgia Tech, and Hawaii. I'm going through the alphabet, so feel free to leave a comment what NHL team or College I should do for "J"!

This is an Iowa Hawkeyes Refresh snapback: these came out during the spring of 2012. This picture is great because it highlights great qualities: two-colored snap and raise-embroidered script and logo. What you can't tell from the picture is that it has a square brim, green under-brim, and contrasting button and eyelets. Hatmonster has a wide variety of Refresh snapbacks still available on their website, so be sure to check them out and get your hats while you can!

To the right is a program Zephyr is doing exclusively for summer 2012: white Upshots! These are different from the originals in that they have green under-brims instead of grey. The design is the same, just significantly more white! The snap, crown, over-brim, button, and eyelets are all white! I'm not sure what online retailers will stock these, but there are a few on eBay that can be copped, so check that out here.

Another new design Zephyr came out with is featured on the Rally snapbacks. These are still early in their releasing, so you can find them on eBay and a few other sites like Hatmonster. These have green under-brims, two-colored snaps, contrasting button and eyelets, and a banner-like display on the front of the crown. These are attention-grabbing and provide the wearer with significant swag!

This Iowa Hawkeyes Hype snapback hat is another recent design that Zephyr came out within the last year. One side of the front of the crown is completely the schools logo, while the other side has the word "Hawkeyes" bordering the other side. It also has the unique contrast stitching on the top of the brim; the under-brim is the authentic green. There are four eyelets, instead of the usual six; and around one of the panels is white "piping", an additional embellishment that highlights that particular panel.

The all-familiar, ever-popular Superstar Snapback for the University of Iowa comes in a variety of colorways. There was a period of time where Zephyr made their hats with round brims, but now "90% of our snapbacks are square brims." And still, a few stockists like Lids continue to carry round brims. These have the authentic green under-brims, one-colored snaps, matching buttons and eyelets, and the incredible raised-embroidery. Hatmonster currently has an almost uncountable number of Superstar Snapbacks on their website, so be sure to check them out!

A particular snapback design Zephyr that continues to grow on me is the Headliner. For those that do not know, there are a variety of versions of the Headliner, which are explained in this blog post. To the right is the Original, which was made with a round brim; while below is the the Black Headliner, which was made with square brims and a variety of other great qualities. All three versions of the Headliner have raised-embroidery, which is how you can tell them apart from fakes or other brands with the similar, cursive letter.

Another favorite design of mine is the Blockbuster 2 snapbacks. The Iowa Hawkeyes Blockbuster 2 pictured is one of the colorways this design was made with. The other one has the reverse colorway: yellow crown, white script, yellow Hawkeye, and white eyelets. The font of the Blockbuster 2's was not made with raised embroidery; however the logo of the Hawkeye is. The under-brims are the authentic green, the snaps are one-colored, and there is not really anything else displayed on the design. Numerous other brands have designs similar to the Blockbuster 2, but the placement of the font and logo that Zephyr does is, in my opinion, much better than others.

Left, the Hawkeyes Supersonic snapback, which is a 3-tone made with round brims and green under-brims. Right, the Hawkeyes Front Runner, a style that came out during the summer of 2012. Which is your favorite?
